How to Qualify for the EPT: Beating the $22 Rebuy

This is the sixth article in a seven-part series from EPT Serial Qualifier Pierre Neuville. Check back every Thursday for the next in the series.
See the list of all articles in the series below.
The $22 Rebuy EPT qualifier on PokerStars is a tricky tournament as there is only one or two EPT seats available.
The goal with this article is to give you the best chance for a return on your investment.

Step 1: Understand the Different Parts of the Tournament

First step: Distinguish the two completely different parts of the tournament.
Part A: The Re-Buy Period
The objective in the re-buy stage is to survive as economically as possible while at the same time building a stack marked cards, little by little, to have enough chips for the increasing blinds.
The last 10 minutes before the add-on period, in fact, can be quite expensive given how fast the blinds are rising.
At the beginning of the re-buy period, you can do a double re-buy to truly double your stack up to a full 20,000 if you have the chance.
Lesson 6 shorthanded 8880
Get to the rebuy and half the field is gone.
But, during this period, you have to play very economically – meaning no flips for 5,000 or 6,000 chips.
These won’t increase your chances of qualifying.
The only goal – never to lose sight of – is to get to the add-on period without spending too much.
This is achieved by going into a mode of play that’s a bit unusual – essentially you don’t “play” poker during this period.
You “survive economically,” see very few flops and maximize your return if there's an opportunity.
When you’re in the pre-add-on period, you must only do one re-buy at a time … and then try to survive until you find a flop that can quadruple you up.
First Benefit of the Add-On Stage: Fewer Players to Share the Money
Congratulations.
You’ve made it to the add-on stage, where 50% of the players who started the tournament have already dropped out.
This is the first benefit of this type of qualifying tournament: the prize money is now divided up between a much smaller group of players.
In the long run, we can have infrared contactlenses a very good ROI in this tournament if we play into the add-on period every time.
In fact the real tournament doesn’t even begin until the add-on stage - and the number one advantage is that fewer players will share the overall prize money.
Part B: The Add-On Stage
The add-on is 50,000 chips and each player now starts a new tournament where everyone has virtually the same stack  - between 55,000 and 100,000+.
boeree pierre
Get the seat and Boeree awaits.
Also of note here: there is often a few payout spots of €500 in these tournaments on top of the sole winner of the qualifier.
So for a good return, watch out for this bubble before taking the risks you need to win the “winner takes all” part of the tournament.
In Summary:
Basically there are three parts to the $22 re-buy tournaments:
1) The first part, where the objective is to arrive at the add-on stage, absolutely, but to get there as cheaply as possible.
2) The second part is between the add-on stage and the money bubble (if there are extra payout spots) where you can look to get a small return on your investment
3) The “winner takes all” stage once the payouts are reached where the real battle for qualification begins
These require three different strategies altogether depending on the period.
If your average re-buy cost stays around €240, this tournament is very profitable if you win one in 12.
Good luck!

SNG ABCs: Calling Short-Stack All-Ins

Everyone knows that the key to winning sit-and-gos is to play aggressively. However, that isn't always going to be possible.
When you're in the big blind and have a short-stack all-in in front of you, aggression isn't going to help you. You either call or you fold.
So how do you decide which route to take?
Well, first of all, you can go by hand quality. If you have a great hand, it makes your decision fairly easy.
If, however, your holdings are less than stellar, you have to judge by more than hand quality: you look at the odds.
What Exactly are the Required Odds?
Many players don't take odds into account at all when deciding whether to call a short-stack shove.
They think, "Oh, he's all-in - he must have a hand. My T-8 must be no good."
This is incorrect. Though your T-8 may indeed be a dog, you may be getting the required odds to call marked cards.
So what exactly are the "required odds?"
There's no way to determine the exact required odds, because you don't know for sure what your opponent's holding.
However, in my four-part sit-and-go article I advise, "If you are getting 2-1 or better, you'd better have a good reason for folding."
Meaning that unless this guy is the tightest player in the world, at those odds you should probably be calling.
Phil Hellmuth
If you're getting 2-1 or better and have a decent stack, you should be calling.

If it is late in the tournament and the player is short-stacked, he'll be shoving all-in with a very wide range of hands.
I'm not just talking about premium AA, A-K, JJ type hands.
Instead, they'll be pushing all sorts of hands, ones like 9-8, 44, J-Q and even the occasional super spazzy 5-3o.
No two unpaired cards are a huge favorite over two other live unpaired cards.
So if you are getting 2-1 or better and have a decent stack, you should almost always be looking up short-stack shoves.
Let's take a look at how some random hands stack up against other random hands:
A-K vs. 9-8 9-8 will go on to win 36% of the time
A-Q vs. J-Ts J-T will go on to win 41% of the time
44 vs. T-9 T-9 will go on to win 50.3% of the time
A-T vs. 4-7 4-7 will go on to win 35% of the time
A-T vs. T-8 T-8 will go on to win 27.5% of the time
As you can see by this small sampling, the only time you are really a dog is when you are dominated like in the T-8 versus A-T hand.
Other than that, you are almost marked cards contactlenses always 35-40% to win. Thus it would be a huge mistake to fold getting 2-1 or better on a 40% shot.
Think of it this way: if you could bet on flipping a lopsided coin all day that would land heads 40% of the time and tails 60% of the time, and you would be paid out at 2-1 for every heads, you would be rich by the end of the day.
So why pass up that same bet in a poker game?
Let's take a look at an example:
$100/$200 blinds. You're in the big blind with $6,000.
The small blind has $500 after posting. It's a full table and there is a $25 ante.
It's folded around to the SB, who shoves all-in for a total of $600. You're in the BB with T 7.
Should you call?
Kevin Saul
All you need is some 7th-grade math.

Let's do a little light seventh-grade math.
The SB is in for $600; there is $250 in from the antes, and you already have $200 in.
That makes a total of $1,050. You have to call $400 more to win $1,050.
So should you call? Absolutely. This is almost an any-two-cards situation. Getting 3-1 makes folding almost completely out of the question.
Now of course in a perfect world, you would never have to call with a hand that's behind your opponent's range.
You could just raise everyone else's blinds and steal your way to victory.
But in reality, that won't work. You are going to run into this situation.
And if you make a habit out of folding when you're getting 2-1 odds or better against a shorty, you're making a big error.

Deep-Stacked MTT Strategy: Day 1, 6,000 to Go

If you want to be successful at the WSOP this year, you'll need to have a solid understanding of deep-stacked tournament play.
With starting stacks now three times the buy-in, solid deep-stack play is going to be a prerequisite to going deep in any series event.
And that means if you're used to playing standard live poker tournaments - where the structures are typically so fast only a fraction of the tournament would qualify as deep-stacked - you'll need to adjust your game.
Do You Play Cash Games?
A deep-stacked tourney is almost identical in play marked cards to a deep-stacked cash game, and all of the elements of a cash game that can typically be missing from a tournament are there.
Set mining for example, which can be a bad idea in a short-stack scenario, again becomes the bread and butter of your strategy.
In a true deep-stack format, you can raise, re-raise and still fold in the same hand. This allows for much more creative and skill-based plays.
Your goal is to play smaller pots, risking as little as possible, until you grab hold of a monster.
Don't needlessly risk your chips - you can almost be guaranteed to find a more favorable spot if you're just willing to wait.
Hand Selection
At the beginning of a major deep-stacked tournament, when your M is 200*, you have enough chips to play in any style you choose. All choices, lines and hands you may choose to play in a cash game, can be played here.

One wrong choice can be the difference from being on the table, or on the rail.
Now is the time to play suited connectors or even suited one-gappers (if that's the kind of game you play). The longer you wait, and the lower your M becomes, the more restricted you become in your options.
Your goal is to get to the flop cheap with hands that have the possibility of flopping something huge, and concealed. No one pays off a straight when there are four connected cards on the board; you want to have the cards in the middle to keep your hand strength off their radar.
You also want to play hands that either flop huge, or are easy folds. The last thing you should do is stack off at this point with bottom two pair or worse.
As your M begins to shrink, you need to start cutting out the low-probability/high-reward hands, as their initial investment becomes too high, forcing you to commit a large percentage of your stack on a long-shot.
*M=The value of your stack divided by the total amount of all blinds and antes: 30,000/150=200
The All-In
One of the trademarks of standard tournament poker is the all-in, as most tournaments have only a few levels of deep-stacked play before players are forced into "push or fold" mode.
The more deep stacked you are though, the less often you should be moving all in.
Think back to all the deep-stacked cash games you've played. When you and your opponents still have large stacks, how often do you get those large stacks all in?
It's a very rare occurrence two players with stacks well over 200bb will get it all in. It does happen, but it's rare enough that it's quite a memorable event.
Deep-stacked tournament poker marked poker is no different. Unless you have the nuts, and another player willing to stack off, it almost never makes sense to get all of your chips across the line.
If you're wondering why, take a look at the numbers:
Blinds: 25/50
Your stack: 27,000
Your opponent's stack: 32,000
Preflop: You raise 3x the bb (150). Only your opponent calls. Pot now 300.

The game grows far more intense around the bubble.
Flop: You bet pot, your opponent calls. Pot 900
Turn: You bet pot again, your opponent calls. Pot is now 2,700
River: You bet pot one more time; your opponent calls. Pot now 8,100
In this scenario, with one player being very aggressive and the other player just calling, the final pot is 8,100 - less than one-third of the total stacks of each player.
To get their whole stacks in, the players would have to bet over three times as many chips across the four betting rounds.
In other words, the type of action needed to get over 540bb in the pot is absolutely sick.
Although it does happen - mostly when two players both flop extremely strong hands - you shouldn't be thinking of the early stages of these tournaments as a time to move all in.
Your goal in deep-stacked MTTs is to play the cash-game grind.  Forget about doubling up.
You're looking to slowly and consistently grow your stack. You can increase your stack 50%-100% during a long tournament day without ever being involved in a very large pot.
Because you have no need to grow your stack immediately, you have no need to put your chips at risk. Protect your stack until you have the best of it, and then make your move.
Play smart, and you'll have no need to get lucky in the opening rounds.

The Best Book Ever Written About Poker

My mantra was "I don't do book reviews." Time to rephrase that to "I don't usually do book reviews." There is a place for this one.
The book is Tommy Angelo's The Elements of Poker. It is, flat out, the best book ever written about poker.
It is also not about poker - like Robert Pirsig's Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance wasn't about motorcycle maintenance.
Like Pirsig's masterpiece, Angelo's book is about life, how to live it, how he's lived it and mislived it. It's about how to live poker, not just play it. And how to make sure it doesn't play marked cards you.
Angelo is widely regarded as the pro's coach. I'd heard about him. Most longtime players have. Guys who play at the nosebleed level consult him when things go wrong. Rank amateurs hire him to teach them the game.
I heard about this book when it first came out last year. "Yeah, yeah," I thought. "Yet another poker book by another hot shot. Fuggedabout'it." (Sorry about that, but I lived in Brooklyn for 35 years).
"Tommy's book is the best poker book I've ever read" - Jay Rosenkrantz (aka Krantz).
Then a mutual friend sent me an autographed copy with an inscription to me! Hmm. Never met this dude and he's inscribing books for me. I now had a moral obligation to read it.
That qualifies as one of the most rewarding obligations I've ever fulfilled. The book is good beyond all possible expectation. It is also written with a delicious economy of style that I envy.
If you want insight into how to play A-Q when a tough dude in middle position throws a raise at you, don't even open this book. It won't tell you.
Angelo really doesn't care how you should play this hand, how you would play or how you could play it. If he cares at all about this hand it is about how you approach the hand, your emotional state when you play it, and what you are focusing on when it comes up.
He cares about your mood when you sat down, how much attention you'd been paying to that tough dude before, how agitated you are by earlier hands that evening, other events in your life, how much you've been talking, how much you've been listening, how smooth and rhythmic your breathing is, how close to tilting you are and whether you are aware of any of this.
This is a book about how to live. The life being lived is poker. It might as well have been construction or architecture. Angelo could be counseling lawyers or stockbrokers or programmers, even bikers.
"No matter how good you play, or how bad they play, you are not entitled to win."
Here are some gems, like the ones on quitting, a topic that gets talked about a lot. I've written about it myself, but even I am sick to death of it. A standard theme of most writings on quitting is the search for a heuristic for guidance.
Should you set loss limits? Win thresholds? Should there be timeframes involved? Fatigue? Should bankroll size be a factor? Blah. Blah.
Angelo on quitting I: "Walking away is easy. The hard part is standing up."
Angelo on quitting II: "It's okay to quit while citing this to yourself as the reason: I want to have fun. I am not having fun. So I will stop this unfun activity now."
Note that you can extrapolate from this: "I am bored ... so I will stop this boring thing now" or "I am tilting like a three-legged pinball machine; this is no longer fun."
As I mentioned, I've written on quitting too. It took me a thousand words to say the same thing.
Angelo on difficult decisions: "The decisions that trouble us most are the ones that matter least."
When I was in graduate school I was offered two ways of earning my keep, two different fellowships. I drove myself batty for a week trying to figure out which to take.
Then I had the same insight. If I couldn't decide, it probably didn't matter much. After all, if there really infrared ink was a big difference between them, I'd see it, right?

Angelo on winning/losing: "To win at poker you have to be very good at losing."
On tilt: "The defining feature of tilt is that there is an emotional link in the chain of cause and effect ... There are three main causes of tilt: Winning, Losing, Breaking Even."
On the most profitable hands: "It is not pocket aces ... It must be a hand that gets played a lot of different ways."
Reciprocity: "Before anything flows, there must be a difference. Between different elevations water flows. Between different pressures, air flows. Between different poker players, money flows."
Players you dislike: "You might use your betting to try to make him less happy, [better to] use it to make him less wealthy."
Entitlement: "No matter how good you play, or how bad they play, you are not entitled to win. If you have time and money, you are entitled to a seat. That is all."
On bad beats: "All my money's in the middle, my cards are face up, and I've got the best hand and the river beats me. I'm unrattled and unwavering. I make my next play like it was scripted, because it was."
Mistakes: "A mistake is when you make a decision that you think was not your best choice." (Italics added.)
I didn't bother to make any comments on these last couple. I shouldn't need to. But it would be very good if you were to read them over very slowly and think them through very carefully.

"Between different pressures, air flows. Between different poker players, money flows."
Angelo meditates. He didn't always. Angelo breathes. He didn't always. He plays better poker since he started doing these things.
I am reminded of the two Zen novices who are standing beside a gently flowing river and comparing the greatness of their masters.
The first says, "I am studying with the finest teacher in the land. You see that apple tree across the water? If he wanted to, he could make an apple fall, float across to him and he would eat it."
His friend nods and says, "My master is not so great. He merely eats when he is hungry and drinks when he is thirsty and he breathes all the while."
With whom would you want to study?

Slowroll

To give the impression that you don’t have the winning hand such as pausing before revealing what you have or because you’re waiting to see the other player’s hands. If you don’t know if you have won the hand or not, then it’s not poor etiquette to expect other player’s to reveal their hands first when they’re first to act. But if you’re holding the nuts on the river and betting has been done, you should just table your hand.
Although slow rolling is highly frowned upon and is disrespectful we just had to show you this slowroll by a 96-year-old man at the WSOP Main Event.

Best Gambling Strategies for Blackjack

Going gambling without prior knowledge of what you're up against is like going into battle without a gun. Since you're risking your money with every move, you might as well make the most out of your gambling experience. I believe that a good strategy helps you develop your game and get you more wins than losses, so I have prepared a short but concise article that discusses helpful strategies for one of the most popular casino games – blackjack. The game of Blackjack is an all-time favorite of veteran gamblers. This is one of those rare casino games where skill actually plays a part whether you win or lose. Blackjack uses the mathematics of probability to reduce the house edge and improve the odds for you. Using a solid and effective marked cards strategy in blackjack will limit the house edge to around one-half of a percent, although the effectiveness of your strategy will always depend on the actual rules and the number of decks used, which may vary according to the casino you're playing in.

Basic blackjack rules state that the dealer must hit on a count of 16 or less, and stand on a count of 17 or more. This is all very good for the house, but if you follow that exact same strategy, you will actually be giving the house a 5.7% edge. So this means that for every $100 you bet on the table, you stand to lose $5.70.

The house advantage is the percentage given to the casino. When you analyze the statistics involved in the game, you will find that for every five hands dealt in blackjack, two hands will not be in your favor. Why? Because the first two cards you're going to be dealt with will either add to 17-21 35% of the time, 12-16 39% of the time, and less than 11 26% of the time. You will see that the first two cards you're going to be dealt with are going to be good only 35% of the time.

Here is a list of a basic strategy guide for playing hard totals in blackjack:

If you have a hard total of 8 or less, always hit.

If you have a hard total of 9, hit if the dealer has an up card of 2, 7, 8, 9, 10 or Ace. Now, if the dealer has a 3, 4, 5 or 6 – double down if you can; if not, hit.

If you have a hard total of 10, hit if the dealer has a 10 or Ace. If the dealer has a 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 or 9 – double down if you can; if not, hit.

If you have a hard total of 11, hit if the dealer has an Ace. If the dealer has a 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 or 10 – double down if you can; if not, hit.

If you have a hard total of 12, hit if the dealer has a 2, 3, 7, 8, 9, 10 or Ace. Stand if the dealer has a 4, 5 or 6.

If you have a hard total of 13 or 14, stand if the dealer has a 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6. Hit if the dealer has a 7, 8, 9, 10 or Ace marked cards lenses.

If you have a hard total of 15, stand if the dealer has a 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6. Hit if the dealer has a 7, 8, 9 or Ace. If the dealer has a 10, you have to surrender if you're allowed to; if not, hit.

If you have a hard total of 16, stand if the dealer has a 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6. Hit if the dealer has a 7 or 8. If the dealer has a 9, 10 or Ace, surrender if you are allowed to do so, otherwise hit.

If you have a hard total of 17 or higher, always stand.

Strategy guide for playing soft totals in blackjack:

If you have an Ace 2 or Ace 3 soft total, hit if the dealer has an up card of 2, 3, 4, 7, 8, 9, 10 or Ace. If the dealer has a 5 or 6 – double down if you can; if not, hit.

If you have an Ace 4 or Ace 5 soft total, hit if the dealer has a 2, 3, 7, 8, 9, 10 or Ace. If the dealer has a 4, 5 or 6 then double down if you are allowed to do so, otherwise hit.

If you have an Ace 6 soft total, hit if the dealer has a 2, 7, 8, 9, 10 or Ace. If the dealer has a 3, 4, 5 or 6 – double down if you can; otherwise, hit.

If you have an Ace 7 soft total, stand if the dealer has a 2, 7 or 8. Hit if the dealer has a 9, 10 or Ace. If the dealer has a 3, 4, 5 or 6 – double down if you can; otherwise stand.

If you have an Ace 8, Ace 9 or Ace 10 soft total, always stand.
